Manchester Mayor Holds Facebook Live On Coronavirus

MANCHESTER, NJ — Manchester Township Mayor Ken Palmer has scheduled a Facebook live event for 4 p.m. Friday to speak to residents about the township's response to the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The township has enacted a number of measures in recent days in response to the outbreak. As of numbers announced by Ocean County officials Thursday afternoon, there were three Manchester residents who have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The township has closed buildings to the public and shut down recreation facilities to help slow the spread of the virus. A township police officer and EMTs have been in self-quarantine after they were exposed to a man who later tested positive for COVID-19.

As of Friday afternoon, there were 890 positive tests for COVID-19 in New Jersey, and 11 people have died from it, according to the state health department. More than 50 percent of those positives are people who are hospitalized, officials said.

COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that's a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past. Read more: NJ Coronavirus Updates: Here's What You Need To Know
