Manchester Reminds Parents Law Requires Bike Helmets For All Under 17

Boy, 11, injured in bicycle-car collision Saturday was not wearing a helmet, police said

Manchester police are reminding parents that bicycle helmets are required by state law for all children under age 17, after an 11-year-old boy was injured Saturday evening when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a car.

The boy, who was treated at Community Medical Center in Toms River and later released, suffered back pain in the accident that happened just before 7:30 p.m., said Capt. Lisa Parker, spokeswoman for the Manchester Township Police Department.

The boy was riding his bicycle southbound in the northbound shoulder of Commonwealth Boulevard in Pine Lake Park when he was hit by a black 2006 Volkswagen Jetta that was attempting to turn right onto Commonwealth from Larchmont Boulevard, Parker said.
