Overturned Truck Spills 24 Tons Of Sand, 1 Hurt: Manchester PD
Police said the driver had to be treated for an injury as a result of the accident.
MANCHESTER, NJ — A Rahway man was injured and 24 tons of sand was spilled Tuesday when a tractor trailer carrying sand for cement overturned in Manchester, police said.
Alfonso Calderon-Chinchil, 61, of Rahway, was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment following the crash, which happened shortly after 7:30 a.m., Manchester Capt. Todd Malland said.
Calderon-Chinchil was driving a 2006 Peterbilt tractor with a dump truck-style trailer loaded with sand for cement on Pasadena Road near Red Oak Grove Road when he lost control of the truck as he tried to negotiate a curve, Malland said.

As the truck started to leave the road, Calderon-Chinchil overcorrected, and tractor trailer jack-knifed and turned over, spilling the concrete sand on the road. The truck also leaked diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid onto the road, he said.
Calderon-Chinchil had head pain but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Malland said.

The road was closed for nearly five hours while officers investigated the crash and the road was cleaned up.
Assisting at the scene were firefighters from the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport and paramedics from MONOC. Also assisting were members of the Berkeley Hazmat Team, the Ocean County Road Department and the Ocean County Health Department.
Patrolman Jesse Hoydis is investigating the crash, but so far, speed and driver error appear to be contributing factors, Malland said.
