Recovered Items Net Township More Than $8K at Online Auction

Online auction site is regularly used by the township to sell recovered items

The latest batch of recovered items sold by administrators on an online auction website netted more than $8,000 in July.

Of the items posted for auction on GovDeals.com on July 12, which included comic books and New York Yankees memorabilia, a lot of assorted jewelry led the sales, taking in $7,505. After GovDeals took a 7.5 percent seller's fee, the jewlery brought in $6,942, according to a township document tracking the sales maintained by Emergency Management Coordinator Arthur Abline.

The minimum bid set by the township for that jewelry was $100.

"It was great," said Business Administrator Elena Zsoldos of the sale during the reports portion of Monday's Township Council meeting. "It worked out very well, it was much more than we expected."

Also among the highest selling items, a set of assorted coins netted nearly $940 and comic book collections brought in $175. Rounding out the sales, other items included a Joe DiMaggio album, sports trading cards and an assortment of electronics.

In June, Councilmember Samuel Fusaro said that some of the items going to auction were of "real interest." On Monday, he congratulated Zsoldos and administrators for making the sales.

The township regularly uses the auction website to sell unclaimed property or materials confiscated by police, the council has said.

Money raised through the sales goes into the township's general fund or the Law Enforcement Trust account, according to Abline.

Township sales through GovDeals in 2012 have totalled $12,875 so far. The council on Monday approved the sale of a 2002 Dodge Neon sedan for auction on the site. It was not immediately clear when it will be for sale or what the minimum asking price will be.
