See It In Photos: Manchester Battles Point Pleasant Boro

Hawks fight hard, but Panthers overpower them in the end

There were bright spots for the Manchester football team on Friday night.

A forced fumble. A blocked field goal and a deflection that caused another to hit the left upright.

And a whole lot of heart.

The Hawks never quit battling, never quit trying to make something happen, but in the end they simply could not outmuscle Point Pleasant Boro, falling 34-0 to the Panthers in the Shore Conference Class B South game.

Manchester’s front line pushed and fought for yards, but the Hawks (0-4,0-4) could never break holes in the Point Boro defensive line. As a result, sophomore quarterback Steven Rodriguez and running back Javier Holguin were contained in the backfield and never got in gear.

Rodriguez was injured in the second quarter on his sole pass of the game and did not return, leaving the game in the hands of freshman quarterback Kenny Burd.

Manchester’s defense had a bit better time of it, forcing the Panthers (3-1, 3-0) to punt twice and stopping them in the red zone twice, where Point Boro then attemped to settle for field goals that never came to fruition.
