Three Hurt As Car Hits Tree At High Speed: Police

The driver had been charged with drunk driving, according to a report.

JACKSON, NJ -- Three people were injured when a car crashed into a tree early Monday after police in a neighboring town had seen the car traveling at a high rate of speed, police said. The driver is alleged to have been drinking, according to a report.

Jackson Township police were called to Cross Street and East Veterans Highway at 1:38 a.m. Monday by Lakewood Township police, who reported seeing a car traveling at about 100 mph on Cross Street before losing sight of the vehicle, Jackson Capt. Steven Laskiewicz said.

A short time later a 1993 Honda Civic was discovered crashed into a tree on a property at the intersection of East Veterans Highway and Cross Street, Laskiewicz said.

Two people -- a 19-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman -- were found in the car and suffered serious injuries, he said. They were taken to the hospital for treatment, he said.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, initially left the scene of the crash, Laskiewicz said, but then returned and was takent to an area hospital for treatment.

No further details on the three people were released by police.

The Lakewood Scoop reported the driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and that the Honda was unregistered.

The Lakewood Scoop also reported the incident began when Lakewood police tried to pull the car over but the driver took off.
