Waretown Resident Faces Heroin Charges In Lakehurst: Chief

The car was pulled over for failure to maintain its lane on Route 70; two occupants admitted using heroin just before stop, the chief said.

LAKEHURST, NJ — Two people are facing drug charges after police found heroin and paraphernalia in the car they were in during a motor vehicle stop, Lakehurst police said Thursday.

Shiabon Poff, 37, of Waretown and Alberto Lopes, 30, of Toms River both were arrested Sunday, Oct. 23, following an investigation by Sgt. Matthew Kline and Officer Jonathan Papernik, Lakehurst Police Chief Eric Higgins said.

Papernik stopped a 2007 Nissan Altima about 4:40 p.m. on Sunday for failing to maintain its lane on Route 70, Higgins said. Once stopped, Poff, who was the driver, and Lopes, both manifested symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, he said.

An investigation determined that both subjects had recently purchased heroin and admitted to using heroin just prior to being pulled over, Higgins said. A search of the vehicle uncovered heroin, hypodermic needles, and a glass CDS pipe, he said.

Poff and Lopes were both arrested and taken to the Lakehurst Police Department for processing, Higgins said. Poff was charged with possession of heroin, possession of hypodermic needles, possession of drug paraphernalia, and being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, and Lopes was charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, he said.
