Watch Manchester Police Officer Dive To Avoid Being Hit By Car

The officer had to think quickly to avoid serious injury in the incident.

MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester Township police officer was nearly hit by a car in early November while stopped at the scene of an accident, and the police department is sharing the scary incident to remind motorists of the Move Over law.

In a post on Facebook, the department shared the video from the car of Patrolman Kyle Rickvalsky, who was investigating an accident where a vehicle had hit a deer.

Rickvalsky's patrol car was pulled off to the side of the road and "his emergency lights (were) shining as bright as the upcoming holiday lights," the post said. Rickvalsky, who was outside his car, saw a car headed for the passenger side of his patrol vehicle, so he walked to the driver's side.

"As Ptl. Rickvalsky approached the driver side of his patrol vehicle, the oncoming vehicle quickly swerved to avoid colliding with his patrol vehicle, but was heading straight towards him," the post said.

"With some quick thinking and ninja-like reflexes, Ptl. Rickvalsky was able to dive and roll out of the way of a vehicle that failed to move over," the post said.

Rickvalsky was able to report the incident to a Manchester dispatcher, and the car was stopped and the driver ticketed shortly afterward, the post said.

Rickvalsky suffered some scrapes but was otherwise uninjured, the police department said.

In 2016, 15 police officers were killed nationwide while they were outside their patrol cars, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Fund.

"We are thankful that Ptl. Rickvalsky was able to walk away from this incident with only a few scrapes," the post said. "We would like to remind our residents it's the LAW (NJ Title 39:4-92.2) that when you see flashing lights on the side of the road, slow down, and if it’s safe, MOVE OVER! – away from police, fire crews, paramedics and tow-truck drivers.
