Manville Borough Recognizes Fire Prevention Week
The Mayor and Council honored members of the volunteer fire companies when they gave a proclamation in recognition of Fire Prevention Week.

MANVILLE, NJ — The Mayor and Borough Council honored the members of the volunteer fire companies recently when they gave a proclamation in recognition of Fire Prevention Week. Councilman Ron Skirkanish read the proclamation into the public record at a recent meeting.
The National Fire Protection Association sponsors the annual campaign in a continued effort to encourage practicing fire safety measures.
The theme for 2017 is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out.” The premise behind this year’s theme is that within seconds a fire can escalate and seconds count. To ensure personal safety, knowing two escape routes will aid community members in escaping a fire safely.

Some additional tips on the NFPA website include the following:
- Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
- Practice home fire drills twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
- Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
- Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
- Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
