On this coming November’s general election ballot, our community faces an important decision, one that holds the potential to shape Manville's future for generations. We have an opportunity to vote “Yes” on the Manville Sewer Sale Referendum, ensuring a significant investment into the infrastructure of our town. This isn’t just about numbers on a balance sheet; it's about securing a $16.5 million investment in Manville, including a $6.5 million payment to the Borough that will be used pay off municipal debt and stabilize taxes. New Jersey American Water has also committed to an additional $10 million in sewer system improvements over the next decade.
Remember the days before color television? That’s how long some parts of our current sewer infrastructure have been serving us. Our current sewer system is over 80 years old. We've been proud stewards of it for all these years, but age demands attention and significant investment. Without the needed upgrades, we run the risk of postponing essential maintenance due to budgetary constraints, leaving us vulnerable to greater challenges in the future. With our water company New Jersey American Water stepping in, those immediate upgrades become a reality, fortifying our system against flooding, and mitigating the wear and tear of decades.
New Jersey American Water brings expertise rooted in decades of hands-on experience. Their dedicated focus on water and sewer enables them to operate with an efficiency that will save our community money in the long run. And they are no strangers to us. They have been our water provider for decades. Over the last ten years, they have invested $25 million into our water infrastructure, reflecting a genuine commitment to Manville.
Beyond the numbers, this is about our community's future. New Jersey American Water's commitment is to maintain stable rates, just like they do with water rates, and provide customers with one convenient monthly bill. This approach provides a measure of predictability for household budgeting; something we all appreciate.
This isn't just about selling a system; it's about investing in our Borough’s future. Our neighboring communities of Somerville and Bound Brook made this choice and have realized a brighter, debt-free future filled with enhanced infrastructure.
As community members, our focus is on the well-being and progress of Manville. Let's come together, prioritize our shared future, and Vote Yes on the Manville Sewer Sale Referendum. Every vote counts towards a better tomorrow.
