An earlier version of this story prematurely stated that the crash was fatal, and was based on information provided in an NBC4 New York report that has since been corrected. Patch apologizes for any confusion.
“The NJ Transit bus driver, who was the sole occupant of the bus, is undergoing surgery,” prosecutors said before the death was confirmed. “The driver and passengers of the dump truck were also transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious bodily injuries.”
The Maplewood Police Department issued the following alert at 1:13 p.m.:
“Springfield Ave. will be closed in both directions between Chancellor Ave. and Becker Terr until further notice. The reason for the closure is a motor vehicle accident.”
