1978 Arts Center Announces Fall Classes, Shows
Photography, journaling, drawing, watercolor—learn them and see them at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center this fall.
1978 Maplewood Arts Center has announced its Fall 2010 workshops and shows. Six classes ranging from photography to drawing to watercolor to journaling to discussion are open to various ages. The two fall exhibits announced will showcase, first, local artists in all media and, second, art centered around the theme of breast cancer awareness.
Kids Beginner Photography: Ages 10 - 15, Mondays, starting in October, 4:15 to 5:15 pm for 6 weeks, $75. (This class is subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer scholarship fund...normally $150.) Bring a digital camera or borrow one from 1978 ($50 deposit required and refunded when the camera is returned). Instructor Joy Yagid can be reached by email or call 201-657-6631.
Kids Advanced Photography: Ages 10 - 15, Mondays, starting in Nov, 4:15 to 5:15 pm - 5 weeks, $70. Limited to four students. (This class is subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer scholarship fund and normally costs $140). Students will work on a selected project to further their skill set. The Contemporary Artists Forum: Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m., (every other Tuesday, beginning September 14) Fee $50 for 8 sessions. The Contemporary Artists Forum is a critique group where serious artists discuss each others work and influences facing artists today. Group leader Mikel Frank holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Pratt Institute. Email him or call 201-306-1970.
Adult Watercolor: Either Tuesday or Friday, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., Fee $96.00. Adult. Enjoy a relaxing morning in a gallery setting learning watercolor. Now offering a choice of two mornings. This is an ongoing class. All levels are welcome. Artist/teacher, Evelyn Graves: 973-762-2834.

Thinking With A Pencil: Wednesdays 10 to 11:30 AM. Fee $96 for 8 sessions. Designed to show how drawing can be put to practical use in every field from acting to zoology. This course is intended for two groups: (1) those who wish to use drawing as a tool for thought and communication but lack knowledge of how to make drawings and (2) those who are accustomed to draw but want to enlarge their graphic vocabularies and extend the range of fields in which they can apply the abilities that they already possess. Art Journaling: Thursday evenings (starting September 30) from 7 to 9 p.m. for eight weeks at $72.00. Art Journaling is an illustrated personal journal program. Use text, pictures, junk mail, magazines, paint…..anything goes. Artist/teacher: Evelyn Graves: 973-762-2834.
The Center stresses that starting dates may vary, so please call the teachers directly. Many programs are on-going with optional starting dates. Register for classes directly with the instructor.
EXHIBITIONS
Contemporary Artists Forum Exhibition IX (C.A.F.E.IX) runs from September 12 to October 10, 2010. Opens with reception for the artists: 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Contemporary Artists Forum is a group of 20 artists who get together two Tuesdays per month at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center to discuss and critique each others work. The group is made up of painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers and mixed media artists. This exhibition displays the work that was discussed during the course of the previous years critiques.
2010 Breast Cancer Show: An Artist's View, October 23 to Nov. 28, 2010, is an exhibition in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and displays the work of artists whose lives have been affected by people who have survived the disease. Most of the work will be specific to the topic. Opens with reception for the artists, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on October 23. Curated by Clara Manheim.
