2 Juveniles Hit By Cars In Maplewood Shortly After New School Year Starts

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Two juveniles were hit by cars in Maplewood last week, authorities say.

According to police, the first incident took place outside Maplewood Middle School on Sept. 15: two weeks after the start of a new academic year in the South Orange-Maplewood district.

The driver of the car told officers that the juvenile attempted to run across Baker Street, struck the passenger-side mirror of his motor vehicle, and fell to the ground.

The youth sustained an abrasion above his left eye, an abrasion to his left elbow, and an injury to the area of his left foot, authorities said.

The juvenile told police that he was not attempting to cross the roadway at the designated crosswalk at the time.

The juvenile’s parents were notified of the incident and responded to Maplewood Middle School. The youth was transported to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for evaluation.

BICYCLE RIDER HIT BY CAR

Maplewood police also responded to the area of Valley Street and Park Avenue on Sept. 16 after a juvenile cyclist was hit by a car.

The driver told officers that he struck the youth – who was in the crosswalk – while attempting to turn from Valley Street onto Park Avenue.

EMS workers were notified of the incident and responded to the scene. The juvenile’s father responded to the scene and declined medical attention, police said.

The driver was issued summonses for 39:4-97 and (1) 39: 4-36, police said.
