A Family Connection at Words Bookstore this Sunday

Rebecca Hayes gets the local spotlight — her daughter is India Larrier, former President of the Maplewood First Aid Squad and newly installed Township Committeewoman.

Newly minted Maplewood Township Committee member India Larrier will be at to cheer on her mom, Rebecca Hayes, as Hayes read from her book Private Cathay's Secret at 2 p.m. on Feb. 12.

Hayes' book was published last year, but it was a timely choice for this year's African American History program at Words in celebration of Black History Month.

Private Cathay’s Secret depicts the determination and perseverance of a young slave girl, Cathay Williams, as her life is altered forever by involvement in the American Civil War. Larrier says that the book appeals to both teens and adults — especially teachers.
