Afterschool Program Expanding In South Orange-Maplewood

Increased enrollment has prompted the change, officials said.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - An increase in enrollment has prompted the explansion of the South Mountain YMCA’s after school program.

According to officials, during the last decade student enrollment has steadily increased while district facilities have remained the same. This has created a greater demand for space within district facilities to support district after school programs, athletics, municipal recreational programs and the YMCA’s after school care program.

"In response to the increased demand for the South Mountain YMCA’s after school programming, in a collaborative effort with the YMCA and school administration, additional temporary space has been provided to the YMCA in Clinton Elementary School, South Mountain Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School," officials said in a statement. "We believe the additional space will help with the the growing need for quality after school care for the 2019-2020 school year. The YMCA has indicated to the district plans to expand capacity sometime in late fall."
