Alzheimer's Association Program: Communicate Better with Your Affected Loved One

Program teaches family members how to use emotions and the five senses to communicate with their loved one affected by Alzheimer's disease

Essex County area residents are invited to the Alzheimer’s Association’s community education program on dementia, entitled, “Effective Communication Strategies”. The program will be held on Monday, June 29, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, at Winchester Gardens, 333 Elmwood Avenue, Maplewood. The program is free but registration is required to reserve seating and materials. Please call 973.586.4300 by June 26 to RSVP.

Program Description: Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress, the ability to use words is lost, and families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.
