MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Maplewood Town Officials have opened several cooling centers as the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for the area through the end of the week.

The Maplewood Memorial Library on Baker Street and the Hilton Branch Library on Springfield Avenue are available as cooling centers during normal operating hours.

When the libraries are closed, the Maplewood Police Department can open a cooling center for residents experiencing a heat emergency.

Residents may also contact the department's non-emergency line at (973) 762-1234 for assistance.

The Maplewood Community Pool will also be open to all Maplewood residents, regardless of membership, beginning on Tuesday, June 30.

Non-member residents must present a valid photo ID and proof of residency.

Officials said decisions about opening the pool to non-members during future extreme heat days will be made daily based on staffing and programming needs.

Town officials are urging residents to stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, as indoor temperatures in homes without air conditioning can become significantly hotter than outdoor conditions.

Residents are also encouraged to check on seniors, neighbors, and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.
