The Maplewood Memorial Library invites the community on Monday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. for an author talk featuring Scott Kurashige in conversation with Mia Charlene White, held in recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The event will be held at the main branch, 51 Baker Street, Maplewood.
Kurashige, president of the Boggs Foundation and author of American Peril: The Violent History of Anti-Asian Racism, offers a powerful look at 175 years of anti-Asian violence in the United States, including the rise in attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic fueled by racist rhetoric. Tracing the roots of white supremacist, misogynist, and colonial harm from the exclusion era to today, the book examines how anti-Asian racism has shaped American history while highlighting the grassroots activism and multiracial solidarity that offer a path forward.
He will be joined by Mia Charlene White, PhD, a Maplewood resident, interdisciplinary public scholar, and Faculty Fellow at The New School’s Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy. Their discussion will explore the intersections of racial justice, democracy, and collective action.
The Boggs Foundation continues the legacy of James and Grace Boggs, whose work advanced Civil Rights, Black Power, and cross-racial solidarity. This thought-provoking conversation invites reflection, learning, and action.
