Charles Caldwell Mixes Real, Surreal

African-American themes, and more

While artist Charles Caldwell's latest painting gets political, a show of his work that opened Sunday at the Express Yourself Gallery shows a much wider range.

In "Seal of the President of the United States," Caldwell takes pride in juxtaposing images of President Barack Obama with the presidential seal, including one of Obama in dark sunglasses resembling Malcolm X, or a 1960s soul singer.

But what he calls his Art Deco paintings, done with an airbrush, show a more surrealistic side, with dreamy landscapes of warped figures and twisted buildings.

And his collage-like portrait of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson uses only six colors to produce a dramatic image.

Caldwell will be at the gallery on Sunday, Feb. 22.
