Community Coalition On Race Wants Support

Annual funds appeal is asking for donations.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - After a series of programs this year designed to build a racially integrated and inclusive community, the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is looking for financial help to finance their offerings for 2019.

In 2018, the Community Coalition on Race supported and participated in:

  • Conversations on Race: Defining Integration in the 21st Century
  • Demographics Report research and presentations to rally support for integrated schools and neighborhoods
  • Coffee House Discussions, meet-ups to discuss local race issues
  • Talking to Children about Race: workshop series for parents and youth leaders
  • Forum on Integration & Equity in Our Schools
  • Our fifth multi-cultural festival--XRootsFest
  • SOMa Integrated Playgroup
  • Giving Teens a Voice, talking with teens about race
  • Realtor Coffee & Conversation with the Superintendent of Schools
  • Neighborhoods: Building Blocks for the SOMA Community
  • Supporting the reform of police practices
  • Our 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Observance
  • The Civic Engagement Institute
  • The MLK Peace Luminary Project
  • Black History Month event with the authors of Tasting Freedom: Octavius Catto And The Battle For Equality In Civil War America

According to the organization, the financial support allows the group to work toward inclusiveness and integration in all aspects of community life and to model pro-integrative strategies to towns across the country.

The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Those who donate will receive a thank-you letter confirming the donation for their records by email. Those who prefer to donate by check, the mailing address is:

The organization notes that many companies sponsor matching gift programs that will match charitable contributions made by their employees. Some even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. Ask for the matching gift forms from the human resources department at the company and mail them to the organization and they say they will do the rest.

  • make a gift of appreciated stock
  • add the Coalition as a beneficiary in your estate planning
  • make a commemorative or memorial gift
  • pledge a yearly gift for five years
  • make a restricted gift
  • have any questions about our programs and funding
