UPDATED: Cops Offer $10K Reward To Catch Maplewood Woman's Killer

Authorities say that the 62-year-old Maplewood woman was fatally shot in Newark.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Police in Essex County are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old Maplewood woman in Newark earlier this month, authorities announced Wednesday.

Police have not developed any evidence that a carjacking led to the fatal shooting of Deborah Burton, but an investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Public Safety Department.

Deborah Burton, 62, of Maplewood, died after suffering gunshot wounds around 1:15 p.m. on March 13 on the 100 block of 3rd Street in Newark, prosecutors said.

Emergency responders transported Burton to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:31 p.m., authorities said.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program announced Friday that it is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting.
