Before it debuts in the NYC Fringe Festival, you are invited to a FREE dress rehearsal for THE SLAVE WHO BECAME A MAN – the true story of Ellen and William Craft’s escape from slavery – on Sunday, August 12th at 7:00P at the Burgdorff Center, 10 Durand Rd, Maplewood.
THE SLAVE WHO BECAME A MAN recounts the remarkable story of Ellen and William Craft’s escape from slavery. Married, but living with different masters in Georgia, Ellen – who is very fair and can pass as white – dresses as a man and passes herself off as her husband’s master. Together they make the treacherous journey to Philadelphia, outwitting slave traders, train conductors, slave owners and fellow passengers, all of whom believe strongly in the institution of slavery.
Presented by Redbox Productions in association with the Strollers, THE SLAVE WHO BECAME A MAN will play the NYC Fringe Festival at the Soho Playhouse on Tues 8/14 at 5:30P, Wed 8/15 at 8:00P, Thurs 8/16 at 7:00P, Fri 8/17 at 3:30P and Sat 8/18 at 6:00P.
