The Theater Project Announces Its Fall Schedule

THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HEDDA GABLER, Jeff Whitty’s manic mash-up of the Henrik Ibsen classic and various Pop Culture figures, will kick off The Theater Project’s 2012-13 season. Whitty is the Tony Award-winning  author of the book and lyrics for the hit musical, AVENUE Q.

Beginning just after the original play finishes, the title character discovers that her suicide is a portal rather than an ending.  Emerging in a nonsensical purgatory, surrounded by the likes of Medea and GONE WITH THE WIND’s Mammy, Hedda sets out on a fantastic journey to try and make sense of it all. Along with way, she’ll encounter figures from science fiction and the Bible, black feminists,  two self-hating  60’s gays, and characters familiar from TV police dramas. Patrons may be reminded of additional sources like the OZ legacy, ribald adult cartoons and the movie GROUNDHOG DAY.

The ringmaster for this theatrical circus will be award-winning director Mark Spina, the artistic head of The Theater Project. “It’s a play for anyone who ever wished to be someone else,” he said. “It involves a clash of cultural icons from the past and present, illustrating Society’s evolving views on race, sexual identity and women’s roles. It will also show how fiction and drama have contributed to shaping social attitudes over the last hundred years.”

The play will run for three weekends, commencing on September 20 through October 7. Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm.  On the second and third weekends: Fridays at 8 pm, Saturdays at 2 & 8 pm.  A post-show discussion will be held after each Friday performance.
