From its roots in the djembe orchestra of West Africa, to its various incarnations as Dixieland, swing, bebop, big band and fusion, the improvisational spirit of Jazz has been instrumental in the sound track of the American musical experience since the days of Congo Square in New Orleans during the early 1800’s.
This Music We Call Jazz: Giant Steps features the collages, paintings and photographs of Partrick Hilaire, Nathea Lee, Frank Marshall, Mansa K. Mussa, and Union resident Stephen B. Ellis.
