Flag-Raising And Other Festivities Planned Around Maplewood For Pride Month

After Maplewood holds a Pride flag raising June 2 (with refreshments), there are several other events planned to celebrate Pride Month.

MILLBURN, NJ — Each year, Maplewood kicks off Pride Month with a flag raising and multiple events.

Among the celebrations to be held locally in June are a MAPSO Equality March, a Youth Pride Picnic, and the annual North Jersey Pride Festival.

This year's Pride Flag-Raising Ceremony was Friday, June 2 at 5 p.m. at Town Hall, 574 Valley St. There were events for all ages, including face-painting, music, food, and a community art project, organizers said.

Other Pride events will take place in Maplewood and around Essex County.

The 11th Annual North Jersey Pride Festival will take place on Sunday, June 11, at Memorial Park in Maplewood from 12-6 p.m. Find out more about that event here.

Pride Month traces its roots to and commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots, or Stonewall Uprising. On June 28, 1969, police in New York City raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the West Village. The raid sparked six days of protests.
