Hilton Neighborhood Association Presents 'Movies Under the Stars'

A segment of Maplewood draws together to enjoy silent short films while basking in community glow.

Tonight, Hilton Neighborhood Association President Carol Buchanan proudly presented the HNA's annual "Movies Under the Stars." The event has been bringing out people by the droves from the Hilton neighborhood in Maplewood for the last eight years to the grass outside the community center at DeHart Park.

As noted in a recent article about HNA's 15th anniversary celebration, the association serves many functions for residents in the Hilton neighborhood and beyond—forums are held for candidates of both the Board of Ed and Township Committee, and the group advocates on behalf of the neighborhood on social, educational, political and housing issues. The HNA holds monthly meetings.

But tonight was all about fun, and it was evident on the faces of the people on lawn chairs or blankets, eating up the free popcorn. Showcased were two silent shorts celebrating the work of Stan Laurel, "The Noon Whistle" and "Pick and Shovel."

The pianist on hand was Barry Spatz, a recent Rutgers University Graduate. When asked why he enjoyed playing keyboard along to the silent movie, Spatz replied, "It's great. It's unique. People respond to improvisational music as opposed to a track, or written-out score. I really enjoy it."  Spatz had viewed the movies prior to tonight's showing to best have a framework for his performance as it related to the mood and action of the films. Also helping out was Buchanan's husband Jim, mastering the projection equipment.

Past president of the HNA and current Mayor Vic Deluca was on hand to announce the winner of a 50/50 raffle with some eager volunteers, and to further praise the association's efforts.

A personal note from the writer: After meeting with these fine folks, I am officially jealous of members of the Hilton Neighborhood Association and will advocate such community groups for other Maplewood neighborhoods!
