"To Liberty & Justice" Society of Musical Arts Orchestral Concert October 30

Music inspired by the struggles towards democracy--free concert at Maplewood Middle School

The Society of Musical Arts Maplewood proudly presents a free orchestral concert on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 4 pm in the auditorium of Maplewood Middle School, 7 Burnett Street, Maplewood. Stephen Culbertson of West Orange will conduct music of Beethoven, Sibelius, Copland, and Dudley Buck. Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca will be guest narrator of Copland's Lincoln Portrait.

Culbertson, president of Subito Music Publishing in Verona, carefully crafted a program that reflects upon and is inspired by the ever-present struggles towards fairness and democracy throughout the ages and throughout the world. The Society of Musical Arts Orchestra presents three free concerts each season in Maplewood, guided by founder Samuel Applebaum of Maplewood, musician and music educator, who created the organization in the 1980s. The musicians, from the surrounding communities, are pleased to carry on Applebaum's tradition of providing accessible, quality classical music to the neighborhood.
