Local Yogis Unite for Haiti Today

Baker Street Yoga holds four classes today to raise money for Haiti earthquake relief.

Off The Mat, Into The World, a non-profit organization that was created in 2007 as a to way to merge yoga and activism, declared Wednesday, January 27th as a day where the yoga community can practice together and make a difference. The organization has asked their partner studios to donate a percentage of their revenues on Wednesday to Haiti relief efforts and have recommended that all proceeds be donated to Partners In Health, a community-based health care provider that works with poor people in developing countries.

When Baker Street Yoga owners Blake Henry and Claire Garland heard about the endeavor just two days ago,  they immediately decided to participate.  "We saw it as a way for one community to give to another," said co-owner Henry. "The fact that other yoga communities all over were doing the same thing on the same day made it extra special."

While other Maplewood and South Orange studios such as Shakit Yoga & Living Arts and South Mountain Yoga do not have plans to take part in Wednesday's event, both studios plan on possibly hosting a similar fundraising event in the near future.
