Lucy Schmitz: The UN and the Global Movement for a Culture of Peace

The Ethical Culture Society of Essex County, 516 Prospect St., Maplewood 973-763-1905, www.essexethical.org Sunday, Nov. 15, 11 am

Columbia University student and UN Youth Representative Lucy Schmitz will discuss the National Ethical Service and the global movement for the culture of peace at the UN, and how her concept of ethics has broadened as she has seen it implemented through those organizations. Maplewood resident Schmitz first spoke at the Ethical Culture Society when she was a student at Columbia High School and was leading Spectrum, the school’s gay-straight alliance. Now, after studying in France for two years, she is enrolled at Columbia University, where she is studying international affairs and human rights. Also, for the past two years, Lucy has been the Youth Representative for The National Ethical Service, a UN-affiliated NGO which represents the interests of Ethical Culture Societies and promotes peace and global community in the United Nations.
