Man Steals More Than $100 In KitKat Bars In Maplewood: Police

Police in Maplewood charged a man with shoplifting for taking more than $100 in KitKat bars from a local store.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A man was charged with shoplifting and possession of drug paraphernalia on Monday after police caught him trying to shoplift $138.26 in KitKat bars in Maplewood, police said.

Maplewood Police Officers Alexander and Cruz responded to QuickChek on Springfield Avenue on Monday around 7:30 p.m. on a report of a shoplifter, police said.

Store workers told police that a man wearing blue jeans, black jacket, a grey hooded sweatshirt, and holding a green Whole Foods-style shopping bag, had hidden $138.26 of the candy and "fled the store," police said.

Officers saw a man matching the description on Springfield Avenue. A 49-year-old Newark man was arrested and charged with shoplifting and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was turned over to the Union Police Department for an outstanding warrant after processing, police said.
