Teen And Woman Charged With Handgun Possession After Maplewood Vehicle Stop

A man, 19, and a woman, 20, were charged with handgun possession and other offenses after a motor vehicle stop in Maplewood Monday.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A man and woman were charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of hollow point bullets after a motor vehicle stop in Maplewood on Monday evening, police said Thursday.

Police said they stopped the car on Jan. 30 at 5:40 p.m. at Boyden Avenue and Jacoby Street.

One gun was in the car, police said.

Officer Perone arrested Kyion Phillips, 19, of Maplewood, and Aqueelah Claiborne, 20, of Newark.

Phillips was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point bullets, and having a prohibited weapon.

Claiborne was charged with the same three offenses.

Both were taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility, police said.

The investigation had prompted a vague alert to residents Monday night: "Criminal activity in the area of Boyden Avenue and Jacoby St. Use caution."
