Maplewood Features Black History Month Exhibits, Contests

Maplewood Arts and Culture is hosting Black History Month events and exhibits, some virtual. They recently featured a local 12-year-old poet

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Maplewood Arts and Culture has been updating its schedule of events, contests, and exhibits for Black History Month. The events are listed in detail on the website here, and a calendar for February is here.

Just a sampling from the many exhibits:

  • The General Store Cooperative on Springfield Avenue is displaying an exhibit in its storefront throughout February dedicated to three important Black mathematicians.
  • This Friday, Chef Jesse Jones will host a virtual event about traditional Southern cooking.
  • The YMCA is accepting submissions of poetry, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and other works of art inspired by a Black author or artist by this Friday. It's open to artists of all ages and sponsored by the YMCA Teen Leaders program.

Also, Maplewood Arts and Culture has been featuring some of their events and participants on social media. Last week, they featured a poem on YouTube by a 12-year-old student that was part of the BLM Poetry Project. The student attends the nearby Kent Place School, a girls' school in Summit. Check out Amina's poem here.
