Maplewood Girl Struck And Killed By Train: Officials

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A "juvenile female pedestrian" was struck and killed by a NJ Transit train west of the Maplewood train station Wednesday afternoon, NJ Transit confirmed on Tuesday. A story in the Village Green identified her as a 14-year-old Maplewood resident.

New Jersey Transit told Patch, "At approximately 12:15 p.m., non-revenue train X667 which departed from Penn Station New York and was en route to Dover, struck and fatally injured a juvenile female pedestrian west of Maplewood Station. No injuries were reported to the crew on board.

"Morris and Essex Line rail service was temporarily suspended due to this incident. New Jersey Transit Police are on scene leading the investigation."

They would not comment further.

Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul confirmed the girl's age and place of residence for Village Green, but could not give further details at that time. He said, “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family.”

A school district representative said it is not believed that the girl was a student in the Maplewood school district.
