Maplewood Salon Gives Local Women Empowering New Looks

These New Jersey women seeking to reenter the workforce got empowering new looks during an event in Maplewood.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The crew at the Anthony Garubo Salon in Maplewood recently treated a group of nine clients from the Livingston-based Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women to an “empowering” new look during a special “pampering” event aimed at helping women transition to the workforce.

On Monday, the salon opened its doors and donated its time and talent to help empower the CFW clients with a new look. Anything was possible, from a blowout to a cut, color or even highlights.

Patty Kremen, the career Services Manager at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women, said that she helped to organize the event because it’s important to help women who are looking for a job or in-transition to feel empowered and good about their appearance.

“Sometimes you are too focused on your job search and you need to take time to look inward and focus on yourself,” Kremen said.

Monica Lutz of Bloomfield, a mother of three who was among the participants, said that she was married for 17 ½ years before finding herself divorced with no profession.

“I felt so broken,” she said, expressing thanks for the programs available at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women, which helped her get back on her feet.

“We love this tradition… it’s the high point of our year,” said Janine Garubo Austin, the salon’s managing director. “With spring and Mother’s Day, it feels like a good time to have a new beginning.”
