Maplewood's Historic Connection to the Roosevelts
Many residents aren't aware Teddy Roosevelt's family used to visit Maplewood in the past. Know why we have Roosevelt Road?

I’m fuzzy on exact timing, but while his family resided in their estate on Long Island, they retreated sometimes to the South Mountain area in summertime. Their involvement is memorialized by Roosevelt Road and the short Kermit Place (a family name). Their homestead in LI was called Sagamore, which accounts for the road by that name running up from Ridgewood along the border with South Mountain Reservation. I believe one of the homes still standing up the hill from Wyoming was one of theirs (though maybe a myth?).
As PBS ignites new interest in the Roosevelts, I hope someone with more historical knowledge than mine can share more with us.
