Jimmy P. Mays, 37, formerly of Egg Harbor Township was arrested in Columbia, Md. by detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Maplewood Police Department, FBI and the Maryland State Police. He was reportedly in Maryland pending extradition to New Jersey.
Lavelle T. Davis, 33, of Galloway remains at large. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Both have been charged with three counts of murder. They have also been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, felony murder, robbery and weapons charges, according to the ECPO.
Authorities have identified the three victims of what appears to be a fatal triple shooting that took place in a Maplewood apartment on Sunday, Jan. 29.
Prosecutors say that Maplewood firefighters discovered three, unresponsive adults after being called to a Van Ness Court apartment around 11:45 a.m. to check a resident’s well-being after receiving a call from a concerned person who had been unable to contact them.
On arrival, firefighters used a ladder to gain entry to the apartment where they discovered the three victims, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino.
Emergency responders pronounced the two males and female dead on the scene.
On Monday, Jan. 30, authorities identified the victims as Michael Davis, 45, of Maplewood, Roshana Kenilson, 30, of Paterson and Lance Fraser, 44, of Newark.
“A preliminary investigation indicates that they sustained gunshot wounds but the cause and manner of death will be determined by a medical examiner,” prosecutors stated.
The motive for the murders is unclear, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly said Monday.
Fennelly said that no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made. An investigation is active. Anyone with information can call the Prosecutor's Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or (877) 847-7432.
