New Jersey ‘Tax Marchers’ To Lead Car Caravan Across 7th District

"The 2018 midterm elections will finally give citizens a way to voice our outrage," an activist in New Jersey's 7th District said.

On Sunday, April 15, members of grassroots political groups SOMa Action and NJ7 Forward will lead a caravan protest through towns in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional district, which includes parts of Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union, and Warren counties.

According to a joint statement from organizers, a caravan of decorated cars will proceed through three towns in the 7th Congressional District — Millburn, Springfield, and Westfield — stopping on corners to hand out flyers with “tax facts” and to register people to vote.

Participants will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Clinton Elementary School parking lot, 27 Berkshire Road, Maplewood.

The April 15 rally is part of a national day of protest dubbed the “Tax March.” The protest is being organized to demand an end to the GOP tax bill, which will allegedly “raise taxes for 92 million middle-class families, rip away health care from 13 million people and threaten life-saving programs — all to give tax breaks to millionaires," according to taxmarch.org.

Organizers said that they hope to raise awareness about the bill’s “harmful effects on New Jersey” and remind people to vote in November.

The 7th District’s current representative, Leonard Lance, a Republican, is seeking to keep his seat for a 5th term.

“The 2018 midterm elections will finally give citizens a way to voice our outrage for the epic failure of the Republican Party to hold the Trump administration accountable for its massive financial corruption and conflicts of interests,” said Amy Higer, a member of SOMa Action’s Financial Conflicts of Interest and Anti-Corruption Committee.

“We will vote them out,” Higer added.
