Four high schools, including Millburn and Columbia, and three middle schools were a part of the Region 1 Orchestra Festival at Millburn High School Thursday morning.
In addition to Millburn and Columbia, Bergen County Academies and Randolph High School performed, along with Mendham, South Orange-Maplewood and Millburn middle schools . All schools are members of the North Jersey School Music Association.
Millburn High School performed "Chicken Reel," Polonaise de Concert" and Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians." Jenny Chang played a violin solo on "Polonaise de Concert."

The Columbia High School Chamber Orchestra performed Borodin's "Nocturne" from his String Quartet No. 2 and Mozart's "Concerto No. 12 in A major" with Paul Conrad on piano.
The Millburn Middle School String Orchestra and the Symphonic Orchestra performed Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto," Gliere's "Russian Sailor's Dance," the "Finale from Symphony No. 5," and Rossini's "William Tell Overture."

The Maplewood and South Orange Middle School string chamber orchestras performed Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 15" fourth movement, selections from Handel's "The Fireworks Music," and the "Marcello Suite."
The event is non-competive but each group was critiqued by Paul Hostetter, Director of Orchestra Studies at Montclair State University, and by Mary Ann Mumm, a violinist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
