For the first time, the will offer SCUBA lessons and certification for residents 12 and older.
The program, held in conjunction with Underwater Adventures (UA) in Millburn, will take place on Friday, Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m., and from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5.
UA is making it possible at a significantly discounted price person of $279, plus the cost of materials. (If there are at least 12 students the price will go down to $249.) UA will also offer a 15% discount on materials and equipment for those who sign up.

"To be able to do this so close to home for this price, and in a 16-foot deep diving tank, is a great opportunity," said David Buckley, Maplewood Pool committee member.
The instructor is PADI-certified Charles Hill, a Maplewood resident whose three sons all are lifeguards at the pool.
