SOMSD 'Meets Expectations' In PARCC Assessment

District numbers released show South Orange-Maplewood scoring level four in most categories.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - On average, the South Orange-Maplewood School District has met expectations in terms of the district-by-district, school-by-school PARCC results released this week.

Patch put together the rankings, from top to bottom, for each grade (high school math was broken into Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II). You can see the complete ranking of every school here.

Many districts in New Jersey performed in the "Level 4" and "Level 5" areas, which is between the scores of 750 and 850, the latter being a perfect score. The score breakdowns are as follows:

Level 1 (650-700): Did Not Yet Meet Expectations
Level 2 (700-725): Partially Met Expectations
Level 3 (725-750): Approached Expectations
Level 4 (750-799): Met Expectations
Level 5 (800-850): Exceeded Expectations

In third grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 141 with a score of 765. In fourth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 124 with a score of 772. In fifth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 123 with a score of 771. In sixth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 217 with a score of 761. In seventh grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 207 with a score of 768. In eighth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 210 with a score of 765. In ninth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 85 with a score of 763. In tenth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 146 with a score of 749. In eleventh grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 217 with a score of 726. In twelfth grade English South Orange-Maplewood ranked 217 with a score of 726.

In third grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 175 with a score of 762. In fourth grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 232 with a score of 753. In fifth grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 119 with a score of 761. In sixth grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 148 with a score of 754. In seventh grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 300 with a score of 742. In eighth grade math South Orange-Maplewood ranked 194 with a score of 734. In Algebra I South Orange-Maplewood ranked 249 with a score of 757. In Geometry South Orange-Maplewood ranked 72 with a score of 747. In Algebra II South Orange-Maplewood ranked 38 with a score of 753.

The PARCC tests have been a source of controversy for years, and Gov. Phil Murphy has talked for nearly year about finding replacements for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test.

Patch focused on town school districts, charter, vocational and magnet schools. Please note that many students opted out of taking the exam, though New Jersey hasn't said how many.
