South Orange-Maplewood Superintendent Will Resign

"It is time to get back home," SOMA Superintendent John Ramos wrote.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — South Orange-Maplewood School Superintendent John Ramos has announced plans to resign from his post, school administrators say.

Ramos still has three years remaining on his contract, although it can be can be terminated at any time by mutual agreement, The Village Green reported.

In addition to his stint as SOMA's superintendent, he has also served as the CEO/Principal at the Middle East International School in Doha, Qatar, a Leadership Consultant at the American Consortium Center for Training in Qatar, Director of Minority Student Affairs at the University of Rhode Island, Principal/Director of a laboratory high school in Providence, Rhode Island, Principal of Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Connecticut, Superintendent in Watertown and Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Interim Superintendent in Groton, Connecticut.

Ramos' base salary is $177,500, according to the district website.

SOMA Board of Education President Elizabeth Baker said that the district expects to appoint an interim superintendent in early June.

In a Monday email to staff and administrators, Ramos said that he will be “retiring from service in New Jersey.”

“As a family man, it has been particularly difficult to be out my home for what is now nearly five years,” Ramos wrote. “That reality can take its toll…and has. It is time to get back home.”
