St. Rose of Lima Academy

Budding Botanists in Grade 2!

Ideas are really “sprouting” in Mrs. Carangelo’s class as the St. Rose of Lima Academy students in grade 2 have been “digging” into their unit on Plants. The children have been learning about plant parts and discussing just how important each part of the plant really is. Students compared two apples that were equal in size, color and shape. Both apples were labeled. Apple A was left alone while Apple B was peeled. After making predictions about what might happen to Apple B without the peel, the students created an Observation Log and began journaling changes over a period of two weeks. They discussed how important it is to keep careful notes so as to be able to prove the results of the experiment to others. At the end of two weeks, the students discovered that the peel “protects the apple”, “keeps juice inside”, “keeps the apple fresh”, “keeps the seeds healthy”, and “keeps the apple from shrinking”. Everyone agreed that scientists have to be very observant and very patient too!
