State Police Help Deliver Baby On N.J. Turnpike

Four NJ state policemen helped a woman deliver a healthy girl on the side of the highway in Essex County, authorities say.

Several NJ State troopers took a break from chasing down speeders on Tuesday afternoon to help a mother deliver a healthy baby girl on the side of the NJ Turnpike, authorities reported.

According to the NJ State Police, the expectant mother and her husband were on their way to the doctor for a checkup when her water broke prior to her due date.

The couple called 911 and stopped at on the southbound side of the highway at milepost 106.5 in Newark, where they waited for responding troopers to provide first aid, authorities said.

Three of the troopers - Jason Kazan, Robert Ciecwicz and Robert Kilmurray – arrived on the scene around 2:43 p.m. As they provided first aid, the fourth officer - Robert Ravotto, a certified EMT – tied the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a blanket and cleared her airway.

The troopers continued to provide first aid to both until the first aid squad arrived, authorities said.

Emergency responders then transported the mother and her baby to University Medical Center in Newark, where they were in good condition, police said.
