I have so many issues with this inaccurate and very irresponsible NBC article; prepare yourselves for the wrath of the fashionista.
First, who's to say exactly what constitutes who gets cancer and who does not? Yes, there are lots of statistics out there laced with percentages that fluidly change depending on any one of a number of factors and the government's agenda, but really, it's a crap shoot. I have no known risks and I got it...twice! After the first time I asked what my risk of getting it again and was told because of the treatment I had it was less than 1% which is less than the average women's risk typically noted at 8%. Winning the lottery has better odds - Geez!
Second, whose body is it? I can attest you will never, ever be the same after hearing the words "you have cancer," if you know, for a fact, you have an elevated risk - and are able to take measures to lower that risk than there should be NO judgement by anyone. I don't see these same Judgey McJudgeypants opining when one had a mole or polyp removed to lower the risk of skin or colon cancer...and while the surgical procedures for breast and ovarian cancers are far more severe (mastectomy/hysterectomy) the thought process is the same.
Third, ultimately what I've learned in the past 7 years is that it all comes down to quality of life. Is it worth living your life feeling like a sword is hanging over your head or is it better to educate and empower yourself to take action? As humans we learn and evolve. We have the ability to choose and we have a voice, a voice that can clearly declare, "I am changing the rules!" Live life on your terms. Be brave and smart and be your own best advocate. So let's hashtag this - go to my fan page for my book, Does This Outfit Make Me Look Bald? On Facebook and share my update there with the following #teamangie http://www.nbcnews.com/health/cancer/most-women-who-get-double-mastectomy-dont-need-it-study-n111331
