Community Donates Blood to Remember 9/11

Helping others today to honor those who needed it years ago.

The Marlboro Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse is a group that is known for reaching out and helping the community.

Helping others was exactly what Nancy Geist, Coordinator of the Marlboro Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse, had in mind when she scheduled yesterday’s New Jersey Blood Services Blood Drive. Also sponsored by Marlboro Kiwanis, this event was meant to commemorate the Sept. 11 attacks and give Marlboro residents the chance to help others in need.

The rain did not stop communtiy members from attending the event.

“So far,” explained Geist, “We’ve had a very good turnout. We’ve been here since 3, and we’re right on track as to where we want to be.”

The New York Blood Center brought the equipment and expertise needed to handle donations, while the offered space from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The Marlboro Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse creates various substance abuse programs, such as Hands off Tobacco for middle and elementary school children and workshops for parents, as well as anti-bullying programs, candlelight vigils, teen dances, and offers referrals to health organizations for those in need.

The program was founded in 1990 by Nancy Horowitz, who now acts as a Chairperson for the group. You may have seen signs around town readying, “Stop Bullying Now – Stand Up, Speak Out,” hosted by this group.

Funded by the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and Marlboro Township, this organization offers many services, fundraisers and activities for residents to raise awareness and offer a helping hand to those in need.

If you are interested in volunteering, attending meetings or donating to the Marlboro Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse, be sure to contact the group at drugalliance@marlboro-nj.gov, or call 732-617-0186 for inquiries.

Meetings are held once per month, with the next several being held on Sept. 15, Oct. 13, and Nov. 17.

Due to recent budget cuts to the program, all donations are welcome. Headquarters can be found at 1979 Township Dr., Marlboro, NJ 07746.
