…What to Know and Check

Legitimacy is a big factor when evaluating moving companies to handle your relocation. You understandably may be wary when looking at moving companies in an effort to avoid being taken advantage of. Unfortunately, scams are all too prevalent in this industry, and rogue movers are on the rise. Don’t let a moving scam ruin your next relocation. Instead, heed these tips to make the right decision through research.

Ask around for estimates: While you may be attracted to very low prices, take caution with those low-ball offers. Sometimes there are hidden costs that the company will hit you with later. Other times, the offer is low because the mover requests that you pay everything up front in cash. This is a huge red flag, as they can take your money and never be seen again. The FMCSA says movers are required by law to deliver your goods for no more than 10 percent above the price of a nonbinding estimate – something known as the 110 percent rule.

Check on licensing and insurance: Call the company itself to find out, or visit the USDOT website to run a search. Take note: while interstate movers must register with the federal government, local movers are regulated by the state. Check with your state to research any local mover you may be considering.

Read reviews and official complaints: Browse for official complaints filed with the FMCSA and then check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for accreditation information. Look up Yelp and search reviews, but be sure to take all posted reviews with a grain of salt. That’s because many of them can be scams or fakes. It’s best to ask your friends and family for personal recommendations, or hit up social media sites. Make sure the company is a member of the American Moving & Storage Association.

Request an in-person inspection: No moving company can legitimately provide you with an accurate estimate over the phone. If they insist, run in the other direction. That’s because there’s no way of knowing exactly how much your move will cost unless the movers perform an in-home inspection of your stuff. Gather at least three quotes from moving companies and make sure you get them in writing.

Research professionalism: This is where common sense comes in. Check that your mover has an actual business address with a real office. If a company doesn’t have a verifiable home base, they could be a fly-by-night mover that can’t be trusted to be around for long. Request a bill of lading, make sure they wear uniforms and arrive in marked trucks, and evaluate their estimate line by line.
