WATCH: Alleged JCPL Scammer Rings Doorbell

JCPL warns Monmouth County residents to be careful.

MARLBORO, NJ-- After multiple residents complained, Jersey Central Power & Light posted a warning about alleged scammers in the area.

According to residents posting in the Marlboro NJ Community Facebook group, people claiming to be JCP&L representatives have been calling or ringing doorbells to ask about power bills. They either claim to be with JCP&L or they inquire about your JCP&L electric bill.

These so-called representatives have been asking to see billing statements to see if residents have been affected by a rate increase. A Marlboro woman sent Patch a video of a representative at her front door, taken by a Ring smart doorbell:

JCP&L reminded residents that all employees from either them or their parent company, FirstEnergy, will wear identification marking them as such, and that they won't visit homes unless an appointment has been scheduled.

JCP&L also reminded customers to never give out social security or other sensitive information, because their employees will not call asking for it. Along those lines, you should not show anyone your power bill, unless they have JCP&L or FirstEnergy identification and you have scheduled a visit.
