Marlboro BOE Renames Center After Retiring Superintendent

Marlboro Early Learning Center was renamed the David C. Abbott Early Learning Center.

The Marlboro Early Learning Center will now be called the David C. Abbott Early Learning Center, named after Dr. David C. Abbott who has retired after 17 years as Marlboro’s superintendent.

The Marlboro Board unanimously voted Tuesday during its regular meeting to rename the center and present Abbott with a plaque commemorating the event.

“I hope I live long enough where I can see my grandchildren come here,” Abott said. “These are such power teachers here.”

Board President Michael Lilonsky said Abbott was recognized for “navigating the school district through the myriad challenges.”

Abbott began his service as superintendent of schools for the Marlboro Township School District on July 1, 1997.  The board recognized him for the passage of a 2000 referendum that resulted in the construction of Marlboro Memorial Middle School and Marlboro Early Learning Center, redistricting of all students in 2001, and passage of a referendum in 2009 that resulted in classroom addition to Defino Elementary School.

Lilonsky said Abbott “will be long remembered as an exemplary professional, providing a clear vision of instructional leadership that focused on continuous growth and improvement, introducing and supporting technology in district schools and establishing Marlboro as a lighthouse district for academic excellence”.

Following a musical presentation by the kindergarten class, Abbott and the board walked outside in the rain to view the new name of the building.
