Moving and Downsizing? Here are Some Tips to Cleaning out the Junk!
Whether due to work or personal reasons, facing a move of any size can be daunting. But removing all that household junk should be your first priority before you even consider packing up for the move. You shouldn’t have to pay to move stuff you don’t need any longer! Moving and downsizing involves de-cluttering your space. Here are some helpful tips.
Step 1: Purge Your Closets
Got a closet so stuffed with clothes, shoes and purses that the door won’t close? Consider these guidelines when going through your closet:
- Has it been worn in the last year? As you go through your shirts and pants, ask yourself if you have worn it throughout the last four seasons. If the answer is no, it’s time to go.
- Trendy vs. classic? Keep all the classic pieces like that little black dress that will never go out of style. But that trendy stuff can go. Just remember, it takes about 20 years for a particular style of clothing to make a resurgence in popularity, so why wait that long? Save yourself two decades of staring at it in your closet and donate it.
- Proper fit? If that tight little dress still doesn’t fit and it’s been years of trying, it’s time to get rid of it. Don’t torture yourself every time you look in your closet. Instead, buy clothing that fits and flatters.
- Condition: Get rid of anything that is stained, ripped or damaged beyond repair.
Once that task is done, make a pile for donations, one for trash and one for keeps that you can start boxing up in anticipation of your move.

Step 2: Donate or Sell Unwanted Items
When it comes to furniture, kitchen items and knick-knacks, sell or donate anything you can’t take with you. If downsizing, you can’t realistically bring that sectional or pool table with you. If you just can’t let go of a particular piece of furniture or appliance, rent a storage unit.
Everything else? Donate it to local charities or call a junk removal company to haul away all of your unwanted stuff.

Step 3: Remove Appliances and Electronics
Appliances and electronics obviously take up a lot of space. Now’s the time to purge so you don’t have to take it all with you at great expense. If anything you come across is outdated or damaged, donate or junk it. First, call your junk removal company to make sure they will take it before you leave it out. All gently-used electronics and appliances can be sold online or at a yard sale prior to your move.
