COLTS NECK, NJ — A rabid raccoon was recently found and captured in Colts Neck, township officials said.

On Friday, officials said the township’s animal control service provider, Associated Humane, responded to a call involving a sick raccoon.

The raccoon was discovered in the township’s Brush & Leaf Collection Zone 4, officials said.

Once captured, the animal was tested and confirmed positive for rabies.

Following this incident, officials are asking residents to keep in mind the following safety reminders:

  • Do not interact with wildlife/feral cats under any circumstances. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact. Call Animal Control at 732-922-0100 immediately or contact the Police Department at 732-780-7323 after hours and on weekends.
  • Make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a rabies shot. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid.
  • Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is to vaccinate your pets and to not handle or interact with wildlife. If you are bitten or exposed to the blood/saliva of an animal, contact your physician immediately. Contact your veterinarian if your pet was exposed to wildlife, even if previously vaccinated.
  • All dogs must be licensed in the township. A license can be obtained from the township website or in person at Town Hall, located at 1 Veterans Way, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
